This passage is a warning to those who brag or plan without taking God into confidence, like the rich fool (Luke 12:13-21). You can do this or that if God allows you to do so. You should also know that God is the ultimate promoter of mankind. Whatever, you want to be in life can only be attained if God wants it to be so. Your time and riches belong to Him. All are in His care.
The scripture declares that all good and perfect gifts come from God. It is a good thing, therefore, for a Christian to prosper even in material goods (3 John verse 2). It is very necessary for a Christian to understand that all he has belong to God and can only be properly put to use when he commits such to God. It is not enough to make plans on how to make use of acquired wealth but to find out what the will of God is in the disbursement of such wealth. The Bible records the foolishness of one man who felt he had acquired much wealth and had the unquestionable right to enjoy the wealth without acknowledging the Almighty God whose grace enable him to acquire the wealth (Luke 12:16-21).
This text does not condemn wise planning, rather, as one plans, one should submit ones plans to the Lordship of Christ, desiring the unfolding of God’s perfect will in his daily spending. A Christian should not put his heart on his possession; rather, he/she should seek a way of using such wealth to God’s glory by committing every spending to God as led by the Holy Spirit.
By committing everything to God, one will be directed on how best to use the wealth not just for himself but also for the good of others (James 4:17). Believers are also warned to ensure that acquiring of riches does not lead them to sin. When one fails to properly harness his acquired wealth, it can lead to the sin of omission. Let God control your riches by committing all to Him.
