Colossians 2:1-7

You are welcome to the tenth month of this year! May the rich grace of the Lord be multiplied in us all in Jesus’ name. Amen. In a certain school, a young man was always seen to be very accurate in doing things. He was always ahead of others, and his productivity was always being faultless. When one of the students approached him to know exactly how he managed to do his things without stress and achieved results, he simply replied, “My father has taught me all these; I only need to live as I was taught.”

This is a great lesson for us all. Some of us are lucky to have parents who took the time to build us up. That process of building was very stressful and tedious. In fact, we might not have liked it so but today, we are the better for it.

The town of Colosse, like Corinth, was a breeding place for cults in the days when Paul founded the Church there. Many who came in from other places to trade also brought in their own religions. Some who accepted Christ tried to blend it with their own old religion and this was confusing. Paul was speaking to the Colossians to fully acknowledge Christ and live in the doctrines they had received from him. He asked them to be rooted and built up in Christ Jesus and have their faith empowered.

Brethren, we don’t need to modify or amend the Word of the Lord or bring up our own ideas which are contrary to the dictates of the Bible. Let us all depart from the pollutions of the world and live according to all we were taught in the new-converts classes, baptismal and confirmation classes and remain rooted in Christ Jesus.

MEMORY VERSE:
Colossians 2:6-7
“Like you, therefore, have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving.”

PRAYER:
Lord, help me to live and grow with Your Word so that the pollutions and deceptions of the world might not overcome me in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

  1. Warning Against Adultery
    5 My son, pay attention to my wisdom,
    turn your ear to my words of insight,
    2 that you may maintain discretion
    and your lips may preserve knowledge.
    3 For the lips of the adulterous woman drip honey,
    and her speech is smoother than oil;
    4 but in the end she is bitter as gall,
    sharp as a double-edged sword.
    5 Her feet go down to death;
    her steps lead straight to the grave.
    6 She gives no thought to the way of life;
    her paths wander aimlessly, but she does not know it.

    7 Now then, my sons, listen to me;
    do not turn aside from what I say.
    8 Keep to a path far from her,
    do not go near the door of her house,
    9 lest you lose your honor to others
    and your dignity[a] to one who is cruel,
    10 lest strangers feast on your wealth
    and your toil enrich the house of another.
    11 At the end of your life you will groan,
    when your flesh and body are spent.
    12 You will say, “How I hated discipline!
    How my heart spurned correction!
    13 I would not obey my teachers
    or turn my ear to my instructors.
    14 And I was soon in serious trouble
    in the assembly of God’s people.”

    15 Drink water from your own cistern,
    running water from your own well.
    16 Should your springs overflow in the streets,
    your streams of water in the public squares?
    17 Let them be yours alone,
    never to be shared with strangers.
    18 May your fountain be blessed,
    and may you rejoice in the wife of your youth.
    19 A loving doe, a graceful deer—
    may her breasts satisfy you always,
    may you ever be intoxicated with her love.
    20 Why, my son, be intoxicated with another man’s wife?
    Why embrace the bosom of a wayward woman?

    21 For your ways are in full view of the Lord,
    and he examines all your paths.
    22 The evil deeds of the wicked ensnare them;
    the cords of their sins hold them fast.
    23 For lack of discipline they will die,
    led astray by their own great folly.

  2. Better the poor whose walk is blameless
    than a fool whose lips are perverse.

    2 Desire without knowledge is not good—
    how much more will hasty feet miss the way!

    3 A person’s own folly leads to their ruin,
    yet their heart rages against the Lord.

    4 Wealth attracts many friends,
    but even the closest friend of the poor person deserts them.

    5 A false witness will not go unpunished,
    and whoever pours out lies will not go free.

    6 Many curry favor with a ruler,
    and everyone is the friend of one who gives gifts.

    7 The poor are shunned by all their relatives—
    how much more do their friends avoid them!
    Though the poor pursue them with pleading,
    they are nowhere to be found.[a]

    8 The one who gets wisdom loves life;
    the one who cherishes understanding will soon prosper.

    9 A false witness will not go unpunished,
    and whoever pours out lies will perish.

    10 It is not fitting for a fool to live in luxury—
    how much worse for a slave to rule over princes!

    11 A person’s wisdom yields patience;
    it is to one’s glory to overlook an offense.

    12 A king’s rage is like the roar of a lion,
    but his favor is like dew on the grass.

    13 A foolish child is a father’s ruin,
    and a quarrelsome wife is like
    the constant dripping of a leaky roof.

    14 Houses and wealth are inherited from parents,
    but a prudent wife is from the Lord.

    15 Laziness brings on deep sleep,
    and the shiftless go hungry.

    16 Whoever keeps commandments keeps their life,
    but whoever shows contempt for their ways will die.

    17 Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord,
    and he will reward them for what they have done.

    18 Discipline your children, for in that there is hope;
    do not be a willing party to their death.

    19 A hot-tempered person must pay the penalty;
    rescue them, and you will have to do it again.

    20 Listen to advice and accept discipline,
    and at the end you will be counted among the wise.

    21 Many are the plans in a person’s heart,
    but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.

    22 What a person desires is unfailing love[b];
    better to be poor than a liar.

    23 The fear of the Lord leads to life;
    then one rests content, untouched by trouble.

    24 A sluggard buries his hand in the dish;
    he will not even bring it back to his mouth!

    25 Flog a mocker, and the simple will learn prudence;
    rebuke the discerning, and they will gain knowledge.

    26 Whoever robs their father and drives out their mother
    is a child who brings shame and disgrace.

    27 Stop listening to instruction, my son,
    and you will stray from the words of knowledge.

    28 A corrupt witness mocks at justice,
    and the mouth of the wicked gulps down evil.

    29 Penalties are prepared for mockers,
    and beatings for the backs of fools.

  3. Wickedness in the World
    6 When human beings began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, 2 the sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose. 3 Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not contend with[a] humans forever, for they are mortal[b]; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.”

    4 The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.

    5 The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. 6 The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. 7 So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.” 8 But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.

    Noah and the Flood
    9 This is the account of Noah and his family.

    Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked faithfully with God. 10 Noah had three sons: Shem, Ham and Japheth.

    11 Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence. 12 God saw how corrupt the earth had become, for all the people on earth had corrupted their ways. 13 So God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth. 14 So make yourself an ark of cypress[c] wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out. 15 This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be three hundred cubits long, fifty cubits wide and thirty cubits high.[d] 16 Make a roof for it, leaving below the roof an opening one cubit[e] high all around.[f] Put a door in the side of the ark and make lower, middle and upper decks. 17 I am going to bring floodwaters on the earth to destroy all life under the heavens, every creature that has the breath of life in it. Everything on earth will perish. 18 But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you. 19 You are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you. 20 Two of every kind of bird, of every kind of animal and of every kind of creature that moves along the ground will come to you to be kept alive. 21 You are to take every kind of food that is to be eaten and store it away as food for you and for them.”

    22 Noah did everything just as God commanded him.
