“The people who walk in darkness will see a great light. For those who live in a land of deep darkness, a light will shine.”
Helen Keller came to know Him well, though she began her life in terrible isolation. From the age of two, she was blind and deaf, out of touch with the world until her teacher Ann Sullivan finally found a way to communicate with her. When this happened, her father asked a famous minister named Phillips Brooks to tell his daughter about God.
Brooks was glad to do it, but it was the minister who was deeply blessed. Helen told him that she had always known about God; she simply hadn’t had a name for Him. Thirteen years prior to Helen Keller’s birth Brooks had written a wonderful hymn, O Little Town of Bethlehem. However, some of its lyrics were almost prophetic of the privilege God would give him later in life to teach a little girl, born into a silent world, about the wondrous gift of Jesus.
How silently, how silently the wondrous gift is given!
So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heaven.
No ear may hear his coming, but in this world of sin,
Where meek souls will receive him still the dear Christ enters in.
Despite the misconceptions of many, God is a personal Spirit who reaches out to us. He doesn’t hide; He wants us to know Him. Reach out to Him today, and feel the joy and peace that only He can offer.
