Text: Exodus 35:4-10. 20-21
INTRODUCTION: God said you have robbed me, not only in tithes but also in offerings. –Mal. 3:8. Offerings are what we give to God out of our income through His church, for the progress of His work. –Exodus. 35:4-10, 20-21. It is giving out of what is left after the payment of tithes.
Giving of offerings is not new. In the Old Testament, God demanded and received offerings from His people. –
“That which is gone out of thy lips thou shalt keep and perform; even a freewill offering, according as thou hast vowed unto the LORD thy God, which thou hast promised with thy mouth”
“I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call upon the name of the LORD.”
Even today, believers in Christ are required to give
1. Freewill offerings.
2. Regular church offerings.
3. Special church projects offerings.
4. Thanksgiving offerings.
5. Welfare offerings.
6. Offerings for missions work.
Offerings that will be acceptable to God should be done
“Upon the first day of the week let every one of you lay by him in store, as God hath prospered him, that there be no gatherings when I come.”
2. Cheerfully. –
“Every man according as he purposeth in his heart, so let him give; not grudgingly, or of necessity: for God loveth a cheerful giver.”
3. Willingly. –
“For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not.”
4. Bountifully, –
“Now this I say, he who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.”
5. Sacrificially. –
“For to their power, I bear record, yea, and beyond their power they were willing of themselves;”
CONCLUSION: It is more blessed to give than to receive. –
“I have shewed you all things, how that so labouring ye ought to support the weak, and to remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to receive.”
Above all, there are greater rewards in Heaven. –
“(19) Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal (20) But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal (21) For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.
