Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
This is one of my favorite scriptures in the Bible. It is one that I hid in my heart during the first few months of my Christian life. It has been like a wonderful, bright lantern during those dark and dreary nights of uneasiness and hardship. It has been used of God to calm the tempest and settle the raging sea. It has been an anchor in the midst of the storm.
Why? Because it reminds me of my limitations and God’s limitless provision. To rely on self is to rely on nothing at all. J. B. Stoney’s description says it well:
The moment a difficulty occurs, the heart turns to its resource as a bird in trouble turns to its wings to carry it away. If you lean on your own understanding, when a difficulty occurs you begin to think how you can get out of it. Unfortunately, you are as one frantically pumping an empty well for water with which to extinguish a fire, but after all your toil you never succeed. You are anxious and devising, and with all your toil you’re still unable to produce the thing required.
Yes, this conditional promise of God is indeed a friend in the midst of our enemies, hope in the midst of a seemingly hopeless situation. It reminds us to put all of our trust in Him, for all else is futility.
Take these words of wisdom with you throughout your day, throughout your life. Delight yourself in His faithfulness!
