“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.“Matthew 5:16 (KJV)
The reason you are born again is not so that you will have an easy way to heaven but to fulfil a purpose. You need to be the light and make an impact for the kingdom. When you live this way, it will heal you of selfishness. That is what Jesus came to teach: the Son came not for Himself but to lay down His life for His sheep. No man has greater love than this. Jesus came to set the example for us to live by.
In Matthew 5, Jesus gave us a command-not a suggestion-that our light should shine before men. In other words, you should be the Bible the world will read. Paul, writing to the church in Corinth, said “Ye are our epistle” (2 Corinthians 3:2, KJV). God wants to say to you: you are my epistle. When people look at you, they should see the kingdom’s agenda radiating through you not once in a while, once in a blue moon, or only when you are in church, but all the time, even when you are in the company of unbelievers.
Pursuing the kingdom’s agenda is to be a shining light in a dark world. Men may not want to acknowledge it, but they will be forced to because no one can quarrel with the light. Too many believers today have lined up with the world to the point that you cannot tell the difference between them and unbelievers. That is an indictment. You must be different. Light and darkness are two extremes; they will never look the same, so when people cannot tell the difference between you and an unbeliever, it is time to re-examine yourself. Never forget the challenge: let our light so shine before men (not before Christians or angels or God, but men) that they will see your good works and glorify your Father. When you are not pursing the kingdom’s agenda, your light is not shining, men do not see your good works, and your Father is not glorified. This will not be your portion in Jesus’s name. I challenge you to consciously pursue the kingdom’s agenda in all you do in words, thoughts, and actions.
